Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are an increasingly popular way of enhancing the appearance of the face to accentuate your natural features & reverse the appearance of ageing with long-lasting effects.

Injectables such as dermal fillers are suitable for treating fine to deep wrinkles, restoring volume to the face & even augment facial structure. Dermal or facial fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a molecule found naturally in the skin. Hyaluronic acid works as a magnet for moisture, helping your cells retain as much of it as possible so that your skin feels & appears hydrated, plump & healthy.

At ADL Aesthetics, we offer injectable fillers for lip plumping and contouring, treatment of Naso-labial folds (creases from nose to mouth) and Marionette Lines (creases from the lips to chin).

FAQ’s

You may experience minor discomfort during the injection as the viscous filler stretches the skin. Some areas of the face, eg marionette lines & lips, are more sensitive so may be more painful than others.

After your treatment the full effects won’t initially be visible for around 3 days.

Results typically last from to 3-6 months, although this varies between patients depending on how long the hyaluronic acids take to be naturally absorbed by your body.

Your lips will likely be swollen after the procedure. You may also notice some redness or bruising at the injections sites, which is normal. Most side effects will be minor & you will be able to resume most activities once the procedure is done. To get the best results from your treatment we recommend you:

  • Apply ice to your lips afterward using an ice pack or an ice cube covered in cloth (so it doesn’t stick to the lip and cause pain). This will help ease swelling, itching, bruising & any other pain.
  • Take Arnica for bruising.
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will help your body heal.
  • Eat plenty of hydrating fruits & vegetables & try to avoid excess sodium, which may worsen swelling.
  • Ask your doctor which painkillers are OK to take in the days after your treatment. Normally Tylenol will be fine, but not blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen.
  • If you’re getting lip fillers for a specific event, make sure to leave plenty of time in between the procedure & the event to allow your lips to properly recover.
  • Sleep with your head elevated on pillows to reduce swelling. Do not sleep on your face.

Where possible, we advise you to:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours after you get lip or any other dermal fillers. Elevated blood pressure & heart rate from exercise may make swelling or bruising worse. It’s fine to engage in light activities like walking.
  • Avoid high temperatures like steam rooms, saunas or heated exercise classes for 48 hours after treatment. High heat can make swelling more pronounced.
  • Avoid makeup on your lips for up to 24 hours after.
  • Stop smoking. Smoking can increase the risk of infection, so it’s important not to smoke immediately after getting lip fillers. You may also want to avoid being around others who smoke.
  • Avoid alcohol. Alcohol acts a blood thinner & should be avoided for at least 24 hours after getting lip fillers. Alcohol can cause inflammation, increase the likelihood of bruising & make swelling worse. It’s also a good idea to avoid alcohol a few days before your appointment.
  • Don’t fly. We recommend that you wait at least a week after your treatment before flying. This is because the air pressure in a plane can make swelling & bruising worse.

One of the most common side effects of dermal fillers is bruising. Even if you have never bruised before, it is always a possibility. Why? Because bruises are just a small hematoma; they occur when small blood vessels get punctured and leak into the soft tissue beneath.

As there are several injection points with the Russian lip technique, you may find that you have slightly more initial swelling & some bruising after this procedure. This treatment may cause more discomfort than a normal lip filler treatment due to the multiple injection points your injector needs to use.

You may experience an aching or throbbing sensation for a short time after the injection. There will be mild swelling. Side effects of hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary & should only last a few days. They may include:

  • Bleeding from the injection sites
  • Swelling & bruising
  • Redness & tenderness at the site of the injection
  • Reactivation of cold sores or fever blisters (herpes simplex) of the lips or area surrounding the lips.

More serious side effects or risks may include:

  • Severe & prolonged swelling or bruising lasting one week to 10 days.
  • Lip asymmetry (parts of lips are different sizes).
  • Lumps & irregularities in the lips.
  • Injection into a blood vessel, causing tissue loss.
  • Ulceration, scarring, or stiffening of the lip.
  • Allergic reaction causing redness, swelling, or itching around the lips.
